Manufacturing Engineering Design - Bionic Wrench Assembly Fixture
In my Manufacturing Engineering Design Course, the Bionic Wrench was deconstructed and analyzed in order to design and prototype an assembly fixture. The final assembly fixture was made of a machined low carbon steel plate with dowel pins pressed in. The intermediary plate attaches to the riveter’s platen and serves to locate the center of the rivet. The intermediary plate is also made of machined low carbon steel and it is secured using ¼”-20 machine screws. This resulted in:
an assembly fixture that can make 8 fully-functioning wrenches per hour
the creation of an assembly process using our final fixture design that synthesized lean manufacturing and design for assembly principles
